Privacy Policy — DCoding app
Last updated: 24 October 2026
This policy explains how Distinction Coding Pty Ltd (“Distinction Coding”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses and shares information through the DCoding app for Android and iOS. The app is for Distinction Coding students and uses the same student account as our website. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What we collect
- Your account. Your name, email address, the phone number you give when you sign up (optional), and profile details you add, such as your GitHub account and portfolio link. Your password is sent over HTTPS when you sign in or sign up; our servers keep only a secure hash of it.
- Your learning. Your courses and enrolments, class timetable, attendance and self check-ins, absence reports, quiz answers and results, practice and project submissions with their feedback, the time you spend on learning screens (study time), badges, and your learning journey (for example, that you opened a recording).
- Your career activity. Job applications you log (title, link, company and status), jobs you save, the keywords and location of job searches you run, CVs you upload, the AI role recommendations made from your CVs, referral requests (and any CV you attach), interview preparation, recordings of real interviews you record or upload with their transcripts and AI feedback, and, for VIP-plan students, your career coaching profile.
- Team projects. Tasks, comments, messages and files you add to a team project.
- Messages and notifications. Messages from your teachers, your notification inbox and your notification settings.
- Your device. A push notification ID (a Firebase Installation ID), your phone’s platform (Android or iOS), its language and time zone, and a generic device name (such as “Android phone”) for your list of signed-in devices.
The app does not collect your location, contacts, photos or advertising ID, and it contains no advertising or third-party analytics.
Permissions the app asks for
- Notifications, for class reminders and updates about your courses. You can turn categories off in the app or in your phone’s settings.
- Alarms and reminders (Android), so class reminders arrive on time. Without it, reminders may arrive a few minutes late.
- Calendar, only when you tap Add to calendar. The class is handed to your calendar app.
- Face ID or fingerprint, only if you turn on app lock. Your phone checks it; we never receive biometric data.
- Files, only for the CV or interview recording you choose to upload.
- Microphone, only while you record an interview in the app. Ask the interviewer before you record.
What stays on your phone
Your sign-in token is kept in your phone’s secure storage (Keychain on iOS, Keystore on Android). The app also keeps a copy of your timetable so it works offline, your language choice, and any interview recording until it has uploaded. Signing out removes your token; uninstalling the app removes everything it stored.
How we use it
- To run your courses, classes and the app’s features, and to send you reminders and updates.
- So your teachers and our team can support you. For example, your teachers are emailed when you log a job application.
- For AI features, such as recommending roles that suit your CV and giving feedback on practice work.
- To keep your account secure, for example by showing your signed-in devices and letting you sign one out.
- To fix problems and improve our service.
We do not sell your personal information or use it for advertising.
Who we share it with
- Your teachers and Distinction Coding staff, who see your learning and career activity so they can support you. Your teammates see the work you add to a team project.
- Service providers who process data for us:
- Microsoft Azure: hosting, databases and file storage.
- Google Firebase: delivering push notifications.
- OpenAI: AI features. The text of a CV or submission, or the audio of an interview recording, is sent for analysis.
- Adzuna: job search. The keywords and location you search are sent, not your identity.
- Bunny: streaming class recordings.
- Sentry: error reports from our servers, which can include your user ID.
- Email providers, to send you email.
- Authorities, where the law requires it.
Some of these providers process data outside Australia, including in the United States.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the app: open Me, then Delete account, and confirm with your password. You can also ask us to delete it by emailing info@distinctioncoding.com.au from the address on your account.
When an account is deleted, content that is only yours is removed: your devices, notification inbox, CVs, job search activity, study time and interview recordings. Records we must keep for accounting, such as enrolments, payments, attendance and grades, are kept but detached from you, so they no longer identify you, and the account can never be signed in to again.
How long we keep information
We keep your information while your account is open, and delete or de-identify it when your account is deleted, except where we must keep records by law.
Security
The app talks to our servers only over HTTPS. Passwords are stored as hashes, and your sign-in token is kept in your phone’s secure storage.
Your choices and rights
You can see and correct your details in the app under Me, choose which notifications you get, and delete your account. You can also ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or to correct it. If you have a privacy concern, contact us first; if we don’t resolve it, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
Children
The DCoding app is designed for adult students. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app.
Changes
We may update this policy. We’ll change the date above, and tell you in the app about significant changes.
